1 Young Israel of Oak Park West 10 Mile Road Oak Park MI Contacting YIOP Tel. (248) Fax (248) Non-profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Southfield, MI Permit No. 111 Volume 14 Issue 11 NOV חשון-כסלו תשעח Rabbi Michael Cohen The Midrash point to three qualities that Avraham displayed that resulted in the promise of Magen Avraham - that Hashem would guard the reward deserved by him throughout the generations. Firstly, Avraham was secure in his belief, he reached the conclusion that there was one, overarching power, on his own, what we might call today ontotheology - he had an internal understanding of G-dliness. Second, he had an unmovable commitment to his belief; he is described as a foundation, someone who cannot be moved. Third, he was a pioneer in his belief, not relying on a tradition passed to him; the Midrash describes Avraham as a beginning. ישעיהו פרק מ - in The Prophet tells us ש א ו מ ר ום ע ינ יכ ם ור א ו מ י ב ר א א ל ה Lift up your eyes and see who created all this. Through a rational investigation into the design of the universe, we can deduce that there is a Creator. The letters of the word מי and אלה spell out the name of Hashem as creator that is used in Chapter one of Genesis. Concerning Avraham s rock solid belief, there is a most remarkable event that takes place in the development of Avraham Avinu. It is his conflict with Nimrod. Nimrod was the ruler of civilization, at the time, a god of the people. Even though the events of this conflict straddle the oral and the written Torah, when pieced together, they give us a profound insight into the source of our religion, namely, Avraham Avinu and how we are expected to emulate him. There are two occasion when Nimrod and Avraham cross paths. The first is when Avraham is brought to Nimrod, having refused to worship the gods of the day. Nimrod has Avraham thrown into the fiery furnace. Avraham, of course, survives the furnace and comes out unscathed. The second event is, when a war develops in the region of Canaan; four kings from Mesopotamia come to defeat five kings in Canaan. The four kings are led by a king named Amrafel. Rashi tells us, in the name of the Midrash, that this is another name for Nimrod. During this conflict, Lot, Avraham s nephew, is captured together with the five kings; others are killed. Upon hearing that Lot has been captured, Avraham takes all the (continued on next page) 1

2 young men of his household in pursuit of Nimrod to rescue Lot. He enters into the conflict, eventually, saving Lot together with the wicked king of Sedom and the other kings. The Midrash Raba (44:6) tells us that, after the battle, Avraham was concerned that he may have done wrong to enter into the conflict. He had killed many people and there may have been righteous men amongst the dead. Hashem answers Avraham s fears by telling him that he will be protected and he is deserved of great reward for what he did. Hashem reveals to Avraham that Nimrod had created the conflict as pretext to lure Avraham into a confrontation and thereby to kill him. It is the word that Hashem used to comfort Avraham that we use to invoke Avraham in the Amida, when we say Magen Avraham; Hashem is the shield of Avraham. These three qualities alluded to in the blessing that Hashem bestowed on Avraham Magen Avraham are the key elements of Judaism described in the writings of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato some three hundred years ago. In his classic work, Path of the Just, Rabbi Luzzato explains that the foundation of righteousness and root of religion is to have clarity of the meaning and purpose of our existence. The clarity can come from tradition but must not end there; he explains that we have to be constantly investigating so as to clarifying our mission in life.
